The Philosophy of the Super Ball
January 27, 2026In another lifetime, learning to fall meant learning to roll, instead of bracing myself. This kept me safe when I fell out of lifts with dance partners who might be more than 6 feet tall. This rolling type of falling kept me safe from breaking bones more than half a dozen times.
What’s my point? I believe that we’re taught that resilience is about being tough. You know, grit your teeth. Muscle through. Stay in control.
But here’s the truth:
Resilience isn’t toughness. It’s flexibility. It’s also curiosity.
Think tall grass in a storm — it bends, it doesn’t break.
Think kids — they fall, wonder what happened, and try again.
That’s real resilience: the ability to adapt, stay open, and move forward.
The question isn’t, “How do I control this?”
It’s, “How can I flow with this — and what might I discover?”
Want to build true resilience? Start here:
-
Flex your plans. Backup plans aren’t failure — they’re creativity.
-
Trade judgment for curiosity. Ask, “What else could this mean?”
-
Change tiny habits. Flexibility grows from small shifts.
-
Let go faster. Stubbornness isn’t strength. Adaptability is.
-
See setbacks as experiments. No failure, only feedback.
-
Find flexible friends. Mindsets are contagious — choose wisely.
-
Celebrate every pivot. Every shift is a victory.
And, for extra credit:
Maintain a sense of whimsy. It’s a secret doorway to resilience — it keeps you light on your feet, open to surprise, and willing to dance with the unknown.
Bottom line:
You don’t need to get harder.
You need to get softer, smarter, and more curious.
That’s what makes you unbreakable.
